Ka-bar is a very old American cutlery brand founded in the 19th century. The name of the company will not be final until 1920. The brand will become famous in 1942 when the United States Army adopts its 1219C2 combat knife.

Production has long been carried out at two sites, Tidioute in Pennsylvania and Olean in New York State.

A little story goes that the KA-BAR brand came from an American pioneer who wrote a letter to the company thanking them for his excellent knife which allowed him to “kill the bear” that had attacked him. The ink from the letter, roughed up in its transport, had spilled to form the word Ka Bar which the company decided to keep as a mark.
